From my understanding the optical out should now send the original music signal to the DAC without having any influence on the music quality. Is there any chance that a very much more expensive streamer can have any advantage in audio quality? Or only snakeoil? Just speaking about digital out, not the DAC inside the streamer.

And no clicks when changing frequencies. Excellent transport. Joined Dec 6, Messages 1, Likes 1, It all depends on how “lossless” and “bit-perfect” Wiim Mini really is. I am still skeptical until the device is tested properly. All of LinkPlay’s previous devices have measured poorly by amirm. This one uses a newer LinkPlay module than those devices Songbird, KEiiD, Audioengine, many others , which, hopefully, provides cleaner output, particularly via the optical out. He’s going to be reviewing it any day!!!! The device is very impressive it does all that Sonos devices can in terms of streaming and has optical out to boot. This is what Sonos should have done in the first place. That would have helped the DIY community plenty. Sonos speakers are good but they need to realize that they are not a speaker company or a DAC company. Joined Nov 7, Messages 12 Likes Has anyone tried it? That probably seals the deal for me.

Unless it tests out poorly. Jmudrick Addicted to Fun and Learning. Joined Oct 7, Messages Likes I’ve been using the device for awhile. No issues with sound quality but a couple of real usability issues with the Home app: there is no way to queue multiple Qobuz albums unless you go to the trouble of creating a playlist in advance of the listening session.

Even worse, DLNA file playback requires you queue one track at a time. Notwithstanding, it’s become my go-to for Qobuz playback as at least the gapless playback works more reliably than Audirvana for me. I just received my Wiim streamer, and it is a nice little unit. Easy to set up. I am using optical out to Schiit Modi. Does this imply that So long as it has stable clocks and a decent UI, it should work fine.

Seems good value if you already have a DAC, amp etc. Can it use a DLNA source? Jmudrick said:. See comment above. Yes but enqueue one track at a time with my server software Bubbleupnp, Emby. I asked him to check built-in DAC as well as line-in performance. Thank you. You must log in or register to reply here. Similar threads. Replies Views 97K. Sunday at AM mediocrebutarrogant. OS X audio Player Review.

This feature was removed by Apple during the Snow Leopard to Lion transition but Damien Plisson is getting ready to pounce and restore it. This new Audirvana version is still in beta testing hence I will refrain from any comments but initial impressions are very good indeed and the Internet buzz is slowly but surely growing around it.

I intend to revisit the comparison when the new Audirvana has gone alpha but for now I will call it a very close draw between Audirvana and Pure Music. You can spend a bit less even on Decibel or BitPerfect but you will also get far less in return on both features and sound. Considering that the difference in price is more or less equal to a single high-resolution download, I won’t hesitate for a second to recommend that you skip over Decibel and BitPerfect and head straight for Audirvana.

The next step up in price to Pure Music is a little steeper but still affordable by audio standards and it delivers far more complex featurization if you need or want that. Which is all I had to say on the subject. His program thus seems to recover without any problem when an unwanted USB unplugging takes place. All in all it is an easier program to use and delivers its magic without requiring any user effort. Sonically I already indicated that Pure Music and Audirvana are more alike than different.

I would actually be worried if it were any other way. After all, the differences between two programs whose objective is to offer the purest path to audio playback should be minor at best but since their audio engines are different, it is possible to tease out minute nuances between them.

To keep it simple, Pure Music seems to offer slightly more depth and width with a tad more midrange emphasis and Audirvana slightly more resolution and ambiance retrieval. Emphasis is on slightly. Sonic credited the purchase. Some of the content is index and some isn’t. I thought that Pure Music had a very harsh sound compared to Ammara. Lastly, Fidelia. IMO the music sounded neutered.

All personality was gone. I’ve been too bashed in to try Audionirvana yet. Will it work with streaming? Joined Nov 5, Posts Likes I’ts BitPerfect, Ammara, etc. Apparently the developer has built support for all types of audio devices within the application and setting in Apple Audio MIDI setup has no effect on this application. This application operates truly independent of many software layers in Mac OS X.

You are right, Amarra sounds warmer than Pure Music though I did not sense any high frequency harshness from speaker output.

I guess there are differences among different models of headphone and speaker in term of frequency response and sound signature. There are always tradeoffs. If that was there I think I’d Almost be banked. I suspect the library might be a shared config. I thought they did until I notices that the “blue” Amarra wasn’t there and that iTunes was playing a file from a remote library. Switch to a local iTunes library Blue light comes on. This is the same behavior with BitPerfect.

This would be out too. I had some success with this and I’m going to try again. The publisher himself admitted to sweetening the sound.

Listening tests show that Audirvana sounds “better” than other bit-perfect players. This isn’t proof enough for you? I’m sorry if these facts shake the foundations of your orthodoxy. I’m happy that heresy is no longer punished by immolation. Click to expand Rottmannash Major Contributor Forum Donor. Guys read the thread more attentively please before barking. Damien specifically answers a customer in French, in which I’m fluent : How much more clear does it have to be?

The publisher himself is claiming that he’s sweetening the signal. Otherwise Audirvana would sound just like all the other about half a dozen bit-perfect players for OS X. I actually went to the trouble to compare them all before reaching this conclusion. Why do you think Audirvana sounds better? Because it’s more bit-perfect? Surely you realise that bit-perfect is an absolute.

I can’t find it out now, but amirm has a test graph of stereo separation for one of the DACs he tested which shows a blurry line in the middle instead of a clean one. It surprised him in an otherwise perfect measurement performance.

He mentions that he did the test with Audirvana playback. I’d suggest amirm do some bit perfect playback tests between Audirvana and the applications I mentioned but Amir is a Windows lifer, considering his past. He could test Audirvana against foobar which I also successfully tested on OS X for identical bit-perfect playback though the OS X foobar is a limited feature beta version.

Oh, and my opinion, Audirvana sweetening is successful for most music. Damien knows what his business as a coder and he’s got a good ear. Just don’t claim it’s bit-perfect. Still, I’m astonished to find so many Audirvana users among men of science though. What a strange world. My one serious criticism of the built-in sweetening in Audirvana: Plisson should allow users to turn off the Audirvana filters with a checkbox to allow real bit-perfect playback.

The surround sound recordings of Lindberg Lyd not only transform the entire listening experience, but also – more radically – these innovative recordings overturn some very basic concepts regarding how music is played and even composed. This is actually where we can make the most intimate recordings.

The qualities we seek in large rooms are not necessarily a big reverb, but openness due to the absence of close reflecting walls. Making an ambient and beautiful recording is the way of least resistance. A really good recording should be able to bodily move the listener. This core quality of audio production is made by choosing the right venue for the repertoire, and by balancing the image in the placement of microphones and musicians relative to each other in that venue.

There is no method available today to reproduce the exact perception of attending a live performance. That leaves us with the art of illusion when it comes to recording music. Surround sound is a completely new conception of the musical experience. Recorded music is no longer a matter of a fixed two-dimensional setting, but rather a three-dimensional enveloping situation.

Stereo can be described as a flat canvas, while surround sound is a sculpture that you can literally move around and relate to spatially; surrounded by music you can move about in the aural space and choose angles, vantage points and positions.
